What we believe. And WHY.
Part 2 The Bible and why we trust it.
What does the Bible say about itself?
1. What is the Bible?
a) II Peter 1:21 Men spoke from God as they were carried
along by the Holy Spirit.
b) II Timothy 3:16 All Scripture is God-breathed.
c) I Thesslonians 2:13 When you received the Word of God, which
you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men,
but as it actually is, the Word of God.
The Bible teaches us that:
a) The first portion of the Bible, known as the Old Testament, is
the Word of God.
b) The second portion of the Bible, know as the New Testament, is
the Word of God.
c) The entire Bible, from start to finish, is the Word of God.
2. Who Wrote the Bible?
a) II Peter 1:21 Men spoke from God as they were carried
along by the Holy Spirit.
b) I Peter 1:10 The prophets who spoke of the grace that
was to come to you.
c) I Corinthians 2:13 This is what we (the evangelists and
apostles) speak.
The Bible teaches us that:
a) The Bible was written by men
b) The old Testament was written by the prophets
c) The New Testament was written by the evangelists and
apostles
Just a little side note - From the Greek word "Biblia", we
received our English word Bible. Strictly speaking, our
Bible is not just one book but many books put together in
one volume. There are sixty-six books altogether in our
Bible. The Old Testament has 39 books. It was written in
the Hebrew and Aramaic languages between the time of
Moses (about 1500 BC) and the time of Malachi (about 400
BC). The New Testament has 27 books. It was written in
the Greek and Aramaic languages. The Apostle John wrote
the last book of the New Testament (about 100 AD). That
means that 39 men over a period of 1,600 years wrote the
entire Bible. Now, if the Bible was written by human
writers, then why do we say that the Bible is the Word of
God?
3. Why is the Bible the Word of God though it was written
by men?
a) II Peter 1:21 Men spoke from God as they were carried
along by the Holy Spirit.
b) II Timothy 3:16 All Scripture is God-breathed.
c) I Corinthians 2:13 This is what we speak, not in words
taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by
the Spirit.
The Bible teaches us that:
a) God caused the prophets, evangelists, and apostles to
write.
b) "All Scripture" was "breathed into" the human writers
by God. God put into their minds the very thoughts which
they expressed and the very words which they wrote.
(Verbal Inspiration.)
When we originally asked the question who wrote the Bible
we really have to give two answers. First we will answer
that God wrote the Bible, and then we will answer that God
used humans to write the Bible.
The Bible's primary purpose is to point people to Christ. It
is remarkable that the Bible speaks the same message
throughout and never contradicts itself. That is certainly
evidence of the divine authorship of the Bible. It is also
amazing to think about the fact that every single thing
foretold in the Old Testament was fulfilled in the New
Testament. Did you know that no less than 333 Old
Testament prophecies were fulfilled by Jesus in the New
Testament? Furthermore, it is remarkable to think of the
impact and power that the Bible has on the hearts and lives
of people. Again, all these things demonstrate that the
Bible is unique - that the Bible is God's Book! In the final
analysis, we cannot prove the Bible is true. We trust that
the Bible is His Word because the Bible itself tells us so and
that it is the thing God uses to bring us to faith in Jesus.
When should we do with the Bible?
4. How are we to use the Bible?
a) John 5:29 You diligently study the Scripture because you
think that by them you possess eternal life.
These are the Scriptures that testify about Me.
b) Luke 11:28 Blessed rather are those who hear the Word
of God and obey it.
c) Acts 5:29 We cannot help speaking of what we have seen
and heard.
The Bible teaches us that:
a) We ought to diligently read and study the Bible.
b) We ought to regularly hear the Word of God.
c) We ought to believe and live according to it.
d) We should share it's message and teachings with others.
Note: Some say that other books should be added to the Bible and taught as being
God's Word. The Roman Catholic Church adds the books called the Apocrypha to
the Bible. The Mormons add the Book of Mormon. However, the Bible contains all
of what God wants us to know for salvation and life. Jesus never accepted the
Apocryphal Books as coming from God. The Book of Mormon is clearly an invention
of man. There is no promise from God fro any additional holy books like the books
of the Bible.
